Domestic Airports of India

The economy of India is flourishing as a result of the immense increase in the demand for air travel. The credit for this on doubt goes to the tourism and hotel industry of India. Some of the famous tourist places in India are Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Orissa, Bangalore, Kerala and Kashmir. Domestic airports in India are scattered all across its length.. Almost all the important cities in India have domestic airports. To satisfy the binge in the demand for air travel, Air India purchased more than 68 jets from Boeing and Indian Airlines purchased 43 jets from Airbus. Others who have recently made significant investments in domestic airports in India are Jet Airways, IndiGo Airlines and Kingfisher Airlines.

In the past few years, several investments have been made in the Indian air industry to make use of this huge unutilized air transport network. Many low cost air carriers have also entered the Indian market in the past two to three years. The rise of a huge number of domestic airports in India have also benefited the Indian economy and is the cause of the boom in the tourism industry. The famous tourist spots in India are Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Kerala, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. This has made air travel more luxurious and has immensely benefited the travelers and the travel agents. There are more than 5 international airports and more than 65 domestic airports in India. Domestic Airports can be categorized into four divisions: Domestic Airports, Model Domestic Airports, Civil Enclaves and Others. In India there are 37 Domestic Airports, 13 Model Domestic Airports and 13 Civil Enclaves. Cochin and Keshoo are the two other military domain of India.



The Airports Authority of India or AAI formed by the merger of IAAI and NAA through Airports Authority Act No.55 of 1994 started working on 1st April 1995. AAI manages five international airports, 87 domestic airports and 28 civil enclaves. The duties of AAI include:
  • To control and manage the entire Indian airspace
  • Development and Management of International Cargo Terminals.
